You Don't Have to Be "Talented" to Be an Artist
Have you ever come to the blank page and gotten paralyzed because all you can think of is how talented the artists you were looking at on Instagram are? They seem to have endless inspiration and post amazing work every day.
It's fun to check out other artists' work on social media, but if you're feeling intimidated by other artists and the beginning of self-doubt is starting to creep into your creative practice, it might be time to shift your mindset.
The easiest way to pinpoint if this self-doubt is limiting you is if you get this thought: "Why should I even try to make art? There are so many artists out there who are making awesome work. Creating doesn't come easily to me. I should give up."
Maybe you aren't loving the art you are making. That can be really frustrating, because you probably started your art practice to use it as a fun hobby or even try to create a small art business with your doodles and creations.
If any of the above feels like what you're struggling with, let me give you a virtual hug and say: Creating art and finding success (however you define that success) is NOT about talent.
So what is it about? It's about showing up every day, even just for a tiny amount of time, and staying consistent.
Becoming skilled at drawing or painting is something you can learn. That means the more you show up and try, the better you will become.
So the next time that little voice of doubt says, "Why am I even trying? I should just give up!" don't listen to it! Keep going. The art you love is waiting to be created, and only YOU can make it.
You may not be "talented" enough yet. You may not have all the skills that the artists you see online have. What I bet you do have though, is five to ten minutes every day that you can pick up your sketchbook or iPad, and get your hands moving.
