Overcoming Creative Fear & Self-Doubt

creative journey/mindset

Creative fear is something every artist faces, but it doesn’t have to hold you back. Here’s how to push through self-doubt and keep making art.

1. Make “Bad” Art on Purpose

One of the best ways to beat creative fear is to intentionally create something bad. By removing the pressure to make something "good," you free yourself up to explore, take risks, and discover new ideas. After you get that first thing out there, and you're not staring at a blank page anymore, you will feel liberated.

2. Stop Waiting for Inspiration and Start Moving

I used to think that I needed to feel inspired before I sat down to create something. What would I even make if I didn't have an idea first? After wasting a ton of time, I figured out that inspiration often follows action. If you start drawing, even without an idea, your brain will naturally generate ideas as you go. So just start making marks on the page and see where it leads!

3. Your Art is Valuable Because It’s Yours

No one else can create exactly like you. Your perspective, experiences, and artistic choices make your work unique. Instead of worrying about being "good enough," focus on creating what feels true to you. Get quiet for a minute and think, "What do I want to draw today? What would feel good to draw?" It's hard to sit with yourself even for a minute because your inner critic might try to take up that space, but give it a try. You might surprise yourself with what you come up with with even just 60 seconds of brain space.

Fear and doubt never fully go away, but the more you create, the quieter they become.
