How to Build a Simple, Pressure-Free Drawing Habit (That Actually Sticks)

Every artist wants to improve their skills and make drawing everyday a habit that's easy and fun. So why does it sometimes feel like the biggest struggle to stay consistent with your creativity?

I used to find myself waiting for the perfect moment to sit down to draw. I thought that the inspiration would come when it was ready, and then I'd be able to create a masterpiece! That left me feeling disappointed and I ended up avoiding making art because what I made wasn't "perfect."

If you're like me and you're being a perfectionist with your art or are feeling stuck before you even start, there's good news! You can build a drawing habit that feels joyful, doable, and pressure-free. Here’s how:

1. Draw Every Day (Even If It’s Just 5 Minutes)

You know that saying that it takes 66 days to form a habit? Well, I'll let you in on a little secret: You don't need to draw for hours and hours every day for those 66 days to get your good drawing habit in place.

Instead, keep the pressure off and just commit to a small block of time each day. Pick up your crayons, pencil, marker, or iPad for just 5-15 minutes a day. Those small sessions add up fast, and it's easy to keep drawing after a short session. That time adds up!

(Pssst: If you love the idea of a guided daily habit, let me tell you about the 3rd annual 75 Art! It's 75 days of short daily drawing with prompts and community support to keep you showing up. That's over a week longer than the 66 days you need to build that drawing habit you've been meaning to prioritize all year! So by the end of the 75 days of drawing, your new habit will be second nature.)

2. Prompts Can Spark New Ideas

Feeling stuck or sick of drawing the same floral pattern over and over? Prompts are a great and simple way to get unstuck and keep your habit feeling fresh. They give your hand and brain somewhere to start, and you can use them as a launch pad for even more fun and surprising ideas. They don't have to limit you. Think of them as a playful way to keep your daily drawing habit exciting and new.

Even one word can launch a whole sketch session, and you don’t have to take it literally! If the word is “fruit,” maybe you draw a fruit cart, a fruit hat, or an apple with sunglasses.

(Are you soooo ready for some fun new prompts? Inside 75 Art, you get a fresh prompt for each of the 75 days so you never have to face a blank page without a starting place.)

3. Let Go of “Good” and “Bad” Art

You won't always like every drawing that you make. The magic of a daily drawing habit is that the goal isn't to create something perfect. It's to keep showing up and let go of perfectionism. When you take that time to draw for yourself every day, you're also proving to yourself that your art matters, no matter how "good" it looks.

4. Start to See Your Signature Style

When you draw every day, you train your creative muscles the same way that short workouts train your body. Consistently showing up builds your endurance, confidence, and ideas. You'll also start to see how you like to draw certain objects. Maybe you draw tiny circles on the cheeks of people you illustrate. Maybe you found a way that you love to draw tails on cats so it looks like they're twitching. You could spend time experimenting with color palettes and finally land on the one that makes people go "Oh hey, I know that artist! They always use this palette."

This is all the makings of your signature style and unique creative voice
